What Needs To Change As We Get Older?

We will all stay the same season during our lives, our basic skin tone will not suddenly make us leap out of Autumn and into Winter, but how we interpret our colours as we go through life will change.  That shade of fuchsia that Winters could wear head to foot at 20 may only be able to be worn about 25% of an outfit at 50.

When you have your colours done, your Image Consultant should always go through your colour wallet and tell you exactly how to wear each of the colours; it’s a good idea to revisit your colours every 10 years or so to be re-scored, just to make sure you are still making the very best of your shades and tones.  Your Image Consultant should offer you this service automatically and stay in touch with you after your consultation.

How we wear our clothes will change too as we go through life.  We all know that at some point we have spotted people (male and female) dressed completely inappropriately for their age, yes we all want to stay looking young, and we are remaining younger for a lot longer than our grandparents it’s true, but dressing appropriately will actually make you look younger not older.

Cleavage is great; if you’ve got it, flaunt it!  BUT be aware that less is definitely more as you get older.  Too much bosom showing doesn’t look elegant or classy as we age, a hint of what lies beneath is always more appealing.  If you’ve got great legs, show them off!  BUT mini skirts, hot pants and skirts split up to the thigh are not going to look good after a certain age.  You can show off great legs with skirts the right shape for your figure, just on or slightly above the knee is a great length if it suits you, and of course some fabulous shoes to show off those great ankles.

It used to be said that over 40 women should cut their hair.  Rubbish, if you have great hair and it’s long and it suits you, keep it.  What looks old is not long hair but hair that is badly cut, badly coloured and generally out of condition.  Keep you locks shiny, invest in a great cut, get rid of the grey if you want to and have any style or length you fancy that is right for your face shape.  Try and find a hairdresser who understands colour and image and work with them to create the right look for you whatever your age.

If you wear glasses, keep up to date with styles and shapes, they might cost a lot, but it’s an investment worth every penny as they frame your face and are the focus of attention when communicating with people. The wrong glasses can add 10 years, the right ones can lose 10 years.

Buy clothes for the size you are now, not the size you want to be!!  If you get the right colour and style you will look $m, nothing is worse than clothes that are too tight, they actually make you look larger and older.

Top Tips for Dressing Younger

  • Wear prettier clothes, knock off the dark colours

  • Wear a brighter lipstick

  • Wear unmatched suits only, a jacket from one and a skirt from another

  • Wear shorter jackets – as we get shorter so must our jackets!

  • Wear softer fabrics – that taffeta dress may have looked wonderful at 20, but not at 60

  • Wear prettier, daintier shoes

  • No over the top costume jewellery – elegance and discretion will take years off you

  • No outfit should be completely devoid of accessories though – see Article on Accessories for more information

  • Less hairspray, stay away from the frosted make-up, keep your hands groomed
