Frequently Asked questions
What if I just can't see people's skin tone?
You will, I know it can all seem daunting at first but with the correct grounding and learning before you even start to look at skin tone, you will be surprised that it isn't as hard as you think.
What happens if I get clients arguing with me?
This is almost an inevitability at some point in your career. Remember, we are imparting information to people that may well be the complete opposite of what they have been doing all their lives. But the way we impart this information is crucial. We always do this in an empowering, uplifting way, and if you have confidence in your ability, your clients will have confidence in you.
How do I overcome objections when I talk to people about what I do?
The advent of programmes such as What Not To Wear, 10 Years Younger, etc. have helped the Image industry enormously by raising the awareness of our profession. People can be defensive sometimes, but remember this comes from their fear that they have been getting it wrong and you are standing there internally criticising them, not from a place of doubting you and your profession. If you always approach the subject with joy and excitement and tell people you never judge anyone, you can put people at their ease immediately.
Can I work from home?
Yes you can, either a studio at home or a studio outside will be fine. It really is your choice. If you work from home, you need to be able to allocate one room that is dedicated as your studio and away from the rest of the family if you have one. As long as the rest of the family are aware of when you are working and are primed to keep out of the way, that's great! Just think how you would like to be treated if you were having your colours done at someone's house, and make sure you do the same for your clients, then all will be well.
How do I get business?
That depends on which market you are concentrating on. All this is covered in full detail during the colour Training week with specialist advise on marketing and selling your business services. Some Image Consultants concentrate on the domestic market, some on the corporate market, both are covered during the course.
How much can I earn?
This depends on your target market and how often you wish to work. Some Image Consultants when they start still have a full time job and gradually build up their client list before embarking on the profession full time, others just go for it and are full time right from the start.
We talk about sales and targets during the course where you tell me what you want to earn and I work with you in building a business plan to help you achieve that.
Isn't the industry hugely competitive now?
Competitive yes, but not hugely. All industries and professions have competitors which ultimately is good for any profession as it raises the awareness of the services and benefits.
Remember Colour and Image is a very personal experience and not every Image Consultant will be right for every client, so you may well have an established Image Consultant in your area, but not everyone will want to see her, you may well appeal more to certain people and vice versa. As everyone is a potential client, there really are not nearly enough Image Consultants out there to fulfil the demand, so you will always be able to find enough work.
